GenKI4Media: Making Generative AI Work for German SMEs and Newsrooms

Good news: Our team is now part of GenKI4Media, a new R&D project exploring how generative AI can transform workflows for SMEs and news organizations across Germany.

What We're Building

GenKI4Media bridges the gap between state-of-the-art AI technology and everyday business needs. We work with German SMEs and newsrooms to integrate generative AI tools into their existing IT systems using standardized interfaces and open-source technology. Whether you're running a marketing department or managing an editorial team, the goal is the same: To work smarter by using AI for:

  • research and knowledge acquisition (pulling insights from multiple sources tailored to specific editorial needs)

  • content evaluation (assessing quality, credibility, innovation, and emotional tone)

  • automated workflows (handling multi-step business tasks with smart automation)

  • creative exploration (generating new ideas and visions, e.g. for storytelling)

Who's Involved

GenKI4Media is funded by the BMFTR (German Federal Ministry for Research, Technology, and Space) through its "Generative KI für den Mittelstand" program.

The project brings together technology developers, scientific partners, SMEs, and media organizations to ensure real-world impact across different industries.

The consortium is comprised of:

  • 3pc (technology partner, use case partner)

  • ART + COM (technology partner, use case partner)

  • Condat (lead coordinator, technology partner, and use case partner)

  • DFKI (scientific partner)

  • dpa (use case partner)

  • DW Innovation (use case partner, evaluator)

  • Fraunhofer Fokus (scientific partner)

Together, we combine research expertise, technical development, and real-world application to solve practical challenges in media production and business workflows.

Our Role: Co-Managing Three Use Cases

DW Innovation is focused on three pilot scenarios where we we think AI would come in handy:

1. 3D Visualization

Transforming photos, videos, text (and perhaps audio) into 3D models of real spaces. This opens up new possibilities for investigative journalism, set design, or visual storytelling – with outputs ranging from immersive 3D environments to 2D graphics and videos for reports and planning.

2. Compliance and Content Standards

Developing and fine-tuning a multilingual large language model (LLM) that helps editorial teams quickly identify content that doesn't comply with media law, codes of conduct, or press standards. A main challenge: Building high-quality datasets that enable effective training across multiple languages.

3. Modular Instant Pages

Creating flexible, template-based "instant pages" from news and journalistic content provided by press agencies. These modular designs can be easily adapted and sold to smaller media organizations, making professional content accessible at scale.

Project Timeline

GenKI4Media officially launched on February 1, 2025, and will run for 36 months.

Our team came on board in August, and we're already busy creating concepts, organizing workshops, and starting pilot development.
