Verification, Best Practice

Meet Us @ Global Media Forum 2025

When? July 7th and July 8th.

Where? Bonn, Germany (Bundeskunsthalle + Kunstmuseum Bonn + DW HQ).

What is it? Let's recycle a concise summary from this blog: GMF is our broadcaster's big international conference, focusing on media, politics, and technology. This year's motto is: "Breaking barriers, building bridges". The organizers expect close to 1000 attendees and more than 100 speakers in Bonn.

Why are we there? Short answer: Once again, we're a part of the event.

More specifically, we're (co-)hosting four sessions.

The first one is called:
DW ReCo's AI Projects (I): Fostering Verification, Fighting Disinfo
(DW Booth, Kunstmuseum Bonn, July 7th, 14:00h-14:30h, open to all ticket holders)

In this session, four ReCos (Bahia Albrecht, Ipek Baris-Schlicht, Andy Giefer, and Jochen Spangenberg) will give you an intro to three AI-driven projects focused on verification technology: AI-CODE, KID, and vera.ai.

Session #2 is about
Dealing with Disturbing Digital Content – Avoiding Trauma, Guarding Mental Health
(DW Booth, Kunstmuseum Bonn, July 7th, 14:30h-15:00h, open to all ticket holders)

Jochen Spangenberg will explain how users can prepare for (or stay away from) gruesome imagery on the web that may actually leave an unwanted, lasting impression.

Session #3 will continue where Session #1 left off:
DW ReCo's AI Projects (I): The Boon and Bane of AI
(DW Booth, Kunstmuseum Bonn, July 8th, 11:00h-11:30h, open to all ticket holders)

In this one, Kay Macquarrie and Alexander Plaum will introduce plain X and SERMAS – and thus showcase how AI-driven tools can make the life of media professionals a lot easier. If they're designed and used responsibly, that is. Right after, Wilfried Runde (Head of DW ReCo) will discuss "AI Slop", i.e. low-quality, AI-generated media void of effort, logic, and purpose.

The fourth and final session is called:
Spotting AI Fakes – Can You Beat the Machine?"
(Auditorium, Kunstmuseum Bonn, July 8th, 14:15h-15:45h, open to all ticket holders)

This joint venture of DW Fact Check, DW Innovation, and the news-polygraph project, will combine presentations, interactive quizzes, and a Q&A plenary. Eva Lopez and Anna Schild will represent our team.

So lots of ReCos will be around on July 7th and July 8th. If you're in town and would like to discuss journalism, technology, and perspectives for R&D coop, don't hesitate to get in touch and ask for a coffee date.
