Free Online Workshop: Technology and AI To Counter Disinformation

DW Innovation project WeVerify will host a two day virtual event dedicated to research, tools, and concepts in the domain of digital content verification.

WeVerify is one of the research and innovation projects in which we are involved. It focusses on tools and technologies that support the verification and analysis of digital content. The project work covers a great variety of aspects, ranging from the development of individual components such as a Database of Known Fakes to a Deep Fake Detector. Further enhancements and improvements of the well-known verification plug-in (used by almost 50,000 people by now -- free download of the browser extension in the Chrome store here) are also part of what is being done in this 3-year undertaking.

The project is now in its final year. It ends formally on 30 November 2021. Time to look back on what has been done and achieved, while also looking ahead.

Two half-days online event

The consortium decided that a good way to reach out to an external audience is to host an online event in which some of the project results and achievements are to be showcased, while related matters of concern and relevance will also be discussed. This will be done by both project participants and external experts coming from a variety of domains.

Mark your calendars

The two-day event takes place on 16 and 17 June 2021.

Day one, 16 June, focuses on the role of technology and tools that do or can play a role in the verification and fact-checking of digital content. This will be done from various angles and perspectives. It includes a speaker from the European Commission and the European Digital Media Observatory EDMO in the first session, followed by representatives from news agencies Reuters, AFP and the human rights organization Amnesty International who will provide deep practical insights into their work and approaches in session 2. The half day will end with presentations of those that develop and provide AI-based tools and systems as part of their work in the WeVerify project.

Day two, 17 June, then focuses on demonstrating a selection of WeVerify tools and services that support in countering disinformation. Registered participants will be provided with a recording of demonstrations. They will furthermore be given the opportunity to ask questions and register to use many of the tools after the workshop on a trial and test basis. All this will last from 10 am to 1 pm CET.

Free participation

Participation in the event is totally free of charge on both days. All you need to do should you wish to attend is register beforehand. The registration link can be found on the WeVerify event website. This is also where you can see a detailed programme with all sessions and speakers. The project is looking forward to welcoming as many participants as possible. Make sure to be one of them!
