Meet Us @ News Impact Summit

Verification, Investigation and Digital Ethics

When: 31 March 2015
Where: Hamburg, Germany (Alter Wandrahm 20)

What is it?

News Impact Summits are a series of media innovation events organised by the European Journalism Centre (EJC) and the News Lab at Google. Individual conferences focus on "how recently developed approaches and tools can significantly change the way we work in the newsroom, the way we tell stories, and the way we engage audiences and society as a whole."

The focus of the third event in the series focuses on Verification, Investigation, and Digital Ethics. Among the participants in a packed programme of workshops and presentations are acknowledged experts and key actors in the verification sphere.Speakers include Jenni Sargent of Eyewitness Media Hub, Craig Silverman of Emergent, Eliot Higgins of Bellingcat, Fergus Bell of SAM, Hauke Janssen of Der Spiegel and Michael Wegener of ARD News, to name but a few.

The event will furthermore see the launch of the second edition of the Verification Handbook, a must-read for anyone involved in the verification of user-generated content and eyewitness media.

Why are we there?

We are there for a number of reasons. To start with, we (our REVEAL project that is) have joined forces with the organisers and have become an official partner of the event: a very suitable partnership as both are concerned with the verification of user-generated content and related issues.

Secondly, we will play an active role in the Summit: Jochen Spangenberg will deliver a so-called "ignite talk" to start into the day. In the afternoon, he will be joined by Nikos Sarris of ATC. With Nikos in the lead then, the two REVEALers will host a one-hour workshop and demo session in which they will present first prototypes and approaches as they are being developed in REVEAL and in related research undertakings. The REVEAL team presence in Hamburg will be completed by DW Innovation's Ruben Bouwmeester.

The third reason for attending the News Impact Summit in Hamburg is to learn from others who are active and experienced in the verification business, exchange ideas, and discuss possible future cooperation opportunities. No wonder we are excited about the event, and pleased to play our little role in the making of it.

If you want to meet us at News Impact Summit in Hamburg, come and join us there. But don't hesitate too long, as places (which are free of charge, but require prior registration) are limited.

Of course, we will also report about the Summit via our Twitter channel (Hashtag: #NISHBR). Feel free to get in touch with DW Innovation's Jochen Spangenberg and Ruben Bouwmeester who will be present in Hamburg.
