Meet Us @ Prix Italia 2016

When: October 1st 2016 Where: Lampedusa , Italy What is it? Prix Italia, originally launched in 1948, is one of Italy's most important Media and Culture events. Lasting from September 30th to October 2nd, Prix Italia 2016 again gathers media and culture actors from all over the World "to promote and celebrate the best quality, innovation and creativity in the production of Radio and Television programmes and content for the Web." This year's edition chose a radical approach to draw attention to one of the major challenges of our time: the refugee crisis. All of Prix Italia 2016 numerous cultural events, workshops and expert discussions will focus on this topic.

Why are we there?

We are honoured to be invited to participate in a workshop on Saturday October 1st, 10am–4pm on "Virtual Reality" (full agenda here). Bringing together a wide range of content, innovation and technology specialists from a variety of European Public Broadcasters this workshop will thoroughly explore one of Virtual Reality's biggest bets: Is this new technology platform really capable of creating more empathy for the horrible situations that refugees all over Europe have to face? And will this "empathy surplus" subsequently trigger more aid and constructive support measures?

Led by Zillah Watson from the BBC the workshop will look into existing examples of VR stories covering refugee issues and elaborate on as many angles as possible, from technology and best practices to storytelling and ethics.

Our VR expert Linda Rath-Wiggins (also CEO of Berlin VR start-up Vragments) and Wilfried Runde, head of DW Innovation Projects, will be part of this exciting discussion, highlight early VR experiments and introduce Fader, a VR authoring tool for journalists developed by Vragments currently in early beta testing phase.

However, DW's presence at the Prix Italia wouldn't be complete without Elke Sasse (Project Director of the award-winning documentary #MyEscape) who will participate in a panel discussing "how Migration is reshaping Europe and Journalism. The role of public service Media".

Please do not hesitate to get in touch with Linda or Wilfried before or after the event. They will be happy to discuss our work with you. Follow us via the official hashtag #PrixItalia2016 or via @DW_Innovation. Or follow the event non-stop via a live radio stream!
